We all know the Disney Princesses. They are a ubiquitous brand in Western society, and girls all around the world play with them, dress up as them, and want to emulate their perfect lives...
(+ Elsa)
But did you know the following princesses were
almost included in the Disney Princess range by Disney, but instead were killed off for various reasons...
Giselle from Enchanted was supposed to be a Disney Princess, and Disney were very optimistic about her future. They wanted to load the parks and Disney stores with her merchandise, and it makes sense - she's beautiful. However, despite Enchanted being a huge hit, they found out they'd have to pay huge royalties to Amy Adams (who Giselle is based on), so they killed her and instead chose to add Princess Tiana to their merchandising powerbrand. Tiana became Disney's first black princess, even though her film grossed a lot less than Giselle's.
Megara from Hercules was one of Disney's baddest bitches, and is also considered to be one of the sexiest. But Disney made the decision to kill her on the basis that a.) Hercules wasn't that successful, and b.) Meg's costume would be very difficult to replicate well in the parks. Actually, Disney were devastated by the underperformance of Hercules. They were hoping it would be another Aladdin, and were even planning a Broadway show and theme park ride based on the film, neither of which came to fruition. Anyway, I doubt she gives a ****.
Even though
Jane is a pretty well-known character, and she makes occasional appearances in Disney's parks, Disney decided not to ramp her up to Princess level because she didn't look 'princessy' enough, and bore a slight resemblance to both Belle and Wendy.
Kida was an awesome princess, but Atlantis was a big flop, and it was marketed towards boys rather than girls. Her image may also been too sexual.
Eilonwy from The Black Cauldron would make a pretty cool princess, with her rags and humble story, but unfortunately the film flopped, and was pretty much forgotten about. If it had been made a few years later, when the Second Disney Renaissance had begun, maybe her future would have been much more rosy.
Esmaralda from the Hunchback of Notre Dame
was an official Disney Princess until 2004, when she was killed off because people confused her with Jasmine, and also she made little profits. There was also speculation that her sassy persona contributed to her death.
So what do you think about these poor dead princesses? Did Disney make any mistakes? Should they resurrect any? Who do you think they'll kill off next? Write your thoughts down low.
And RIP to all these bad bitches.
