It was New Year’s Eve 1983 and The Smiths touched down in New York City for their first ever US performance, they were playing a well-known nightclub called theDanceteria. The Smiths were scheduled to go on around 1AM, also on the bill that night was MC Lovebug Starski, hip-hop pioneers Whodini and a then unknown singer/dancer who went by the name of Madonna.
According to the interview below with Johnny Marr, he says that supporting them“was the girl that work on the coat check, it was Madonna”
Yeah, I saw this in Q last week. Interesting stuff.
EDIT: The date's a bit off though. Madonna was hardly still working at Danceteria with a record out in late '83, and he can't have meant '82/'83 because they wouldn't have gone to the US at that point... methinks he may have heard something wrong.
