When she debuted with her OOTB's era, she was far from the clean, All-American pop star she is seen as now. She has edgy, un PC songs like Ur So Gay (one of her best to date, imo) and of course IKAG. She also had a raw, rocker vibe to her. I miss her intentionally messy vocals in songs like Long Shot and Simple.
The TD era kinda changed all that. I guess she grew up, but imo, her music grew down. Compare music from PRISM to her early work and I dunno, it just feels like something is missing.
I really loved her during her debut era. I thought if she continued down that road then she would make an album similar to No Doubt. Instead she decided to go the 'I want hits and success' route, which worked in her favor I suppose.
Katy would never do I Kissed A Girl now, I bet. She's working this all American charm these days because those $1.29 singles mean a lot to her.

Did her music not get the memo though? Her lyrics have become elementary. Katy's never been a strong lyricist, but her songs at least used to have punchy and memorable lines that would make up for it.
I mean, compare Fingerprints as an empowerment anthem to Roar. The decline is real.
Her style is arguably edgier, it's the music that turned bland and hit ready.
I blame the big business influences around her as well as her for selling it out.
