laptop. desktops are honestly pretty worthless unless you do lots of heavy duty video editing or stuff like that, and even then top-of-the-line laptops work too. Laptops basically give you everything (except screen size) with the additional benefit of being able to take your work everywhere.
I prefer having a laptop because of its portability. Unless you're doing high end stuff like gaming, then a desktop really isn't that big of a deal to have. I want one because I'm a CS major with a laptop, and I'd like something only for deskwork and programming. But, I went with just having a laptop because I can take it to class.

They have mobile graphics cards which usually aren't that great for gaming. You could do The Sims 3 on fairly high settings with most ~$700 or so laptops, but more demanding games will only be able to run on low settings.
