Mum fights off savage dog
A HEAVILY pregnant woman fought off her pet rottweiler as it savaged her five-year-old daughter at their home west of Melbourne yesterday.
The girl had been playing with the dog for about an hour in the back yard at Kuranjang, near Melton, before it turned savage and bit her head, abdomen and legs.
Her mum, who is eight months pregnant, was bitten on the arm when the dog turned on her as she tried to prise it off her daughter.
Bricklayers working nearby rushed to help the girl, who had surgery in the Royal Children's Hospital last night.
She was in a serious but stable condition.
Her mum was treated at the same hospital after she refused to be separated from her child, paramedics said.
"The girl was in the back yard when the dog attacked her, mum fought the dog off with a stick and the dog then turned and attacked her," Christine Paterson, of the Metropolitan Ambulance Service, said.
Neighbour Jackie Turkovic said she heard screams.
"I just heard the terrible screams and the growling of the dog and automatically knew something horrible had happened," she said.
A dog has been impounded by Melton Shire Council, while another remained on the property yesterday.
Builder Dave Harrison, who was next door, tried to distract the dogs by rapping his hammer against the timber paling fence.
"She was bleeding, she had cuts and bites all over her body and the dog came for us," he said.
"If something got hold of my child like that I wouldn't hesitate to put it down."
Neighbours, including Ms Turkovic, say the second dog should also be removed.
"It is worrying for us because we all have children playing in the street and we don't want a dog like that to get out," she said.
The fate of the impounded dog was not clear.
It is believed the injured woman told council staff the dog had no history of aggression. Its fate was unclear.
