Sugababes, Foo Fighters Control U.K. Charts

British pop/R&B trio Sugababes racked up their sixth U.K. No. 1, and second of 2007, as "About You Now" (Universal Island) climbed 35-1 on yesterday's new singles chart thanks solely to digital sales. Meanwhile, Foo Fighters scored their second British chart-topping album, and first in nearly five years, with "Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace" (RCA).
Sugababes first topped the singles chart with "Freak Like Me" in 2002 and their success has survived several lineup changes. "About You Now" is the lead track from their new album "Change," out next Monday. The single's big leap prevented British vocalist Shayne Ward from entering at No. 1 with the double-sided "No U Hang Up"/"If That's OK With You" (Syco Music/Sony BMG), which had led in "midweek" sales data.
The former winner of ITV's "The X Factor" hit No. 1 at Christmas 2005 with "That's My Goal" and No. 2 with the follow-up, "No Promises," but only No. 14 with "Stand By Me" in the summer of last year. The new single precedes a second album, "Breathless," due Nov. 26.
"Ayo Technology" (Interscope) by 50 Cent featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbaland fell 2-3 on the new singles list, as Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls" (Beluga Heights/Epic), which was No. 1 for the last four weeks, fell to No. 4. "Let Me Think About It" (Data) by Ida Corr vs. Fedde Le Grande soared 64-5.
In the top 20, the remake of the Zutons' "Valerie" (a No. 9 U.K. hit in July 2006) by Mark Ronson featuring Amy Winehouse climbed 41-12, on Columbia. Elvis Presley's run of four consecutive No. 14 reissues was broken as "Hard Headed Woman" (RCA) debuted at No. 15, and Feist achieved a first top 20 hit as "1, 2, 3, 4" (Polydor) climbed 40-16.
North London singer/songwriter Jack Penate followed June's No. 7 hit "Torn on the Platform" with a 48-17 climb for "Second, Minute or Hour" (XL Recordings), and Enrique Iglesias' "Tired Of Being Sorry" (Interscope) rose 58-20.
Foo Fighters last led the U.K. album survey with "One by One" in November 2002, since which "In Your Honor" reached No. 2 in June 2005. James Blunt's "All the Lost Souls" (Custard/Atlantic) was thus nudged down one spot to No. 2, while Ian Brown's fifth solo studio album, "The World Is Yours" (Fiction/Polydor), came in at No. 4. It includes last week's No. 16 single "Illegal Attacks," featuring Sinead O'Connor.
RyanDan, the classical/pop duo comprised of 27-year-old twins Ryan and Dan Kowarsky, debuted at No. 7 with their self-titled debut for Universal Classics & Jazz. In doing so, they outsold PJ Harvey's new set, "White Chalk" (Universal Island), which arrived at No. 11. Swedish singer/guitarist Jose Gonzalez opened at No. 19 with his second album, "In Our Nature" (Peace Frog).
Blunt scored a notable double on Billboard's pan-European sales charts, debuting atop European Top 100 Albums with "All the Lost Souls" while starting a second week at No. 1 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles with "1973." The track is also No. 1 again on the European Airplay chart.
