Nintendo expects 2.8 million Wii-U sales down from 9 million and 3DS from 18 million down to 13.5 million. 25 billion yen loss down from a 55 billion yen profit estimate
3DS Software 80 million -> 66 million and Wii U software 38 million -> 19 million.
Poor dat.
I honestly don't know what they were expecting though. They barely have any 1st party games let alone 3rd party support they only just made a console capable of running games in HD, something it's predecessor's competition were doing 8 years ago and the gamepad just seems like a complete mess and is clearly failing to reach it's target audience..
Nothing wrong with lowering unrealistic expectations. Now if they exceed them, it's more towards their own benefit.
Think like when you tell your parents you're going to fail a test, then come home with a C grade. You didn't fail so it's better than nothing (or in trolls' case, becoming 3rd party ).
The best thing is that Nintendo has enough to cover their ass from last gen. Wii U is a short term issue. 3DS is smashing, they'll break even this gen.

We're talking millions of dollars here. Not an 8th grade math test, mija.
A lowering of expectations doesn't mean they won't make that money.
3DS is going to more than make the expectations difference and extra back on its own.
Your analogy requires Nintendo to make some form of profit with the lowered expectation. But the flaw in your logic is that on a test, you can't score below a 0 no matter how hard you try. Nintendo is reporting losses.
well no they wont make that money since they expect a loss
and the 3DS wont save a whole company when its money maker is suppose to be the Wii U
Tell that to the Gamecube era where they STILL made money.
The world didn't start turning when Playstations were made. Even PS3 costed 5 billion yen losses. That's a mess. Yet Sony and their Gaming Division still exist.
