Spanish would be "easier" and is probably the more popular and useful choice. This is as a language major.

Spanish is easier and depending upon where you live, more practical. As a native English speaker, French phonetics are quite difficult to grasp; Spanish is exactly the opposite and sounds exactly the way it looks in print, IMO. I think French sounds more beautiful tho.

Also, Spanish was easier for me to learn even if both languages are Indo-European + Western Romance and English is a whole other animal.

That's basically phonetically for an English speaker. Spanish is much easier to pronounce even though English has borrowed a lot of words from Latin(from which both Spanish and French are derived) and also French due to conquest.

Gramatically, Spanish and French are like 95% percent similar.

For you, since it sounds like you have no ties to either, go for Spanish first. Like others have said, it's more convenient and useful than the former.

I'm having trouble with this as well atm. I'm half fluent in both, but I live near a more Spanish fluent area and plus I'm half Mexican, so. Kind of necessary to tackle first. But I just love me some French. I've picked up on it much faster and it fits my tongue like a glove (erm, well not a glove, but).
