Winners of the Britain's mobo awards
Sept. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Kanye West was named best hip-hop artist at the Music of Black Origin awards as he toasted his sales victory over rival 50 Cent, who pulled out of the London event.
West, 30, also won the MOBO's best video prize for his single ``Stronger'' at last night's ceremony in the O2, Greenwich.
Amy Winehouse, 24, was named best British female artist. She sang two songs during the evening, ``Tears Dry on Their Own'' and ``Me and Mr. Jones.'' She has canceled concerts and postponed her U.S. and Canada tour after treatment for alcohol and drug abuse.
The MOBO awards were set up in 1996 by businesswoman Kanya King to recognize artists of any race performing music of black origin. Dizzee Rascal was named best British male act.
West and 50 Cent released albums on Sept. 11 and West's album is selling more. Before the release, 50 Cent toned down comments that he would retire if he lost out in the sales race. He later canceled his European tour, which included visits to France, Germany and the U.K., where he was to appear at the MOBO event.
Last night Winehouse was also named female artist of the year at the Vodafone Live Music Awards at Earl's Court in London. Earlier this month, she lost out to the Klaxons for Britain's 2007 Nationwide Mercury Prize, where she was given a standing ovation for her performance.
