Mariah Carey continues tradition of performing for dictators
Quote:
Singer Mariah Carey reportedly performed New Year’s Eve at an event hosted by the sultan of Brunei, pegged as one of “the world’s enduring dictators” by CBS News.
Bolkiah has been “absolute ruler” of Brunei since 1967 and amended the country’s constitution to make himself “infallible” in 2006.
According to CBS News, his government has been accused of “arbitrary detention; limiting freedoms of press, speech and assembly; restricting religious freedom; discriminating against women; restricting labour rights; and exploitation of foreign workers.”
The five-time Grammy winner has performed for other dictators in the past.
Last month, Carey was rumoured to have been paid $1 million US to sing for the president of Angola. Jose Eduardo dos Santos has ruled the third-world country for more than 30 years, with frequent reports of kidnapping and torturing dissidents. She also performed for money managers in the strife-ridden nation of Nigeria in early December.
Make that money Mariah, but don't let it make you. SOURCE
It's astounding which artists these leaders go for. You'd assume they'd go for something more practical, like a world-famous symphony, opera singer, or pianist. It's definitely quite strange in my eyes.
Don't really the problem with this. Surely it's better the money be in Mariah's bank to spend on matching outfits for her kids, than in some dictators torture fund
