Lorde: "I should've done media training"
Quote:
Interviewer: I’m curious, did you have to do any media training before all this started?
I have never done media training. I feel like I probably should have, because then I could’ve better identified some of that baiting in the beginning. Now I’m really good at it. But I think people don’t realize how weird it is to go from being a teenager or being just a human being who has opinions and freely discusses them with other people, to having everything you say scrutinized and taken out of context. In the space of three months, going from never having done an interview to being in Rolling Stone, being in Interview, and not really realizing how that whole thing works. That stuff was so weird. But now I’ve kind of got a handle on it. Now when people are like, “Tell me what you think of Miley!” I’ll say, “What do you think of Miley?” and they like flounder and say, “Well, I think she’s really talented…” and I’m like, there you go.
Interviewer: I remember at the time, at the beginning of your public career, people would be like, “She said this about Selena and this person and this person,” and I just felt like, she’s not dissing anyone—she’s just having a real-life Tumblr discussion and figuring things out. I mean, I talk about pop culture that way too.
[Laughs] Yeah, totally. You know, it’s easier to never talk about anyone else’s work, because they might take it the wrong way.
Interviewer: Do you have any rules of thumb now when you go into an interview?
Obviously, now I’m like, “Don’t let some random comment that you wouldn’t have even thought about overshadow something important that you were actually trying to say.” ’Cause while it’s all well and good to be like, “This thing is ********!” it’s also kind of like crying wolf. I’m much better now at understanding journalists’ intentions. It sounds really jaded, but I think it’s good to never forget that you’re with a journalist. Even if you’re being mates, there’s some intention there. So I try to remember, “Don’t bro down with everyone!”

So there.

Why are they acting like that Selena comment was taken out of context? What she said was extremely anti-feminist and she deserved all the scrutiny she got for it.

I had a feeling she didn't do any.
Glad the good sis is learning that the media will twist anything you say. Even with best intentions, if something sounds slightly shady the media will exploit it. They are looking for that shady quote to blow up so their interview can become a hit.
We all need to forgive her, she was sixteen years old. We all say stupid **** when we're that young, and it's even more nerve-wracking to watch what you say when everyone across the world is listening in.

How is it damage control? She's simply saying that if she had done media training she would've been better equipped to identify interviewers that were just trying to bait her into saying stuff that would cause controversy.
She's not apologising.

I mean, that would've just been using common-sense. She didn't need media training for that.

People are not happy if the artists are not kissing ass all the time like robots.
Oh she's amazing! Then the stans go crazy when everyone praises their faves even if it's just a political correct praise and they go like YAAASS! Stan bitch I want a collaboration and blah blah blah.

Damage control.
Her problem is not understanding the difference between what you say and how you say.

There was nothing anti-feminist about it though.
Though admittedly, as a woman Selena should be able to sit around and wait for her man for however long she wants, being ready for him to come and get it, but it's not far fetched to see how that message can be perceived as anti-feminist in itself.

The whole point in feminism is letting women do whatever they want. If they want to go down a non-sexual route (like Lorde), fine. If they want to be sexual (like Selena), that's fine too. Lorde's the type who would shame a woman who wants to be a stay-at-home mom because it doesn't fit into her narrow view of feminism.
