Universal to lose $175,000,000 from flop Keanu film

Keanu Reeves’ new Samurai epic is failing to cut through at the box office, with Universal Pictures likely to book a massive $US175 million ($197 million) loss on "47 Ronin".
Based on a poor showing so far at the Christmas box office and an equally troubling start in Japan earlier this month, Universal may only recoup its marketing costs, leaving Ronin's pricey $US175 million budget exposed, according to Hollywood Reporter.
The film, which opened in the US on Christmas Day, grossed $US10.7 million in its first two days in America, falling to eigth place at the US box office by Thursday.
Ronin's financial woes are nothing new: Universal was forced to write down the cost of the film, which required extensive reshoots and had its release date pushed back twice, over the course of last year.
The movie is now on track to be the year's second-biggest miss financially after The Lone Ranger, on which Disney lost at least $190 million.
