Avril, Maroon 5, Linkin Park Go Straight To Platinum (u.s.)
The spring releases from Avril Lavigne, Maroon 5 and Linkin Park wasted no time earning Gold and Platinum plaques, according to the June tally of Gold and Platinum certifications by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Lavigne's The Best Damn Thing surged past a million copies sold for a Platinum certification, and she also earned a Gold Mastertone award for the first track, “Girlfriend." Maroon 5's It Won’t Be Soon Before Long also sold over 1 million units, as did Linkin Park's Minutes To Midnight.
Gwen Stefani's latest, The Sweet Escape, also was certified Platinum in June, as All the Right Reasons by Nickelback surpassed the six million sales mark. British rock band Snow Patrol received their first ever Gold record for their release Eyes Open, and Fantasia earned her second Gold album for selling more than 500,000 copies of her sophomore set, Fantasia. Pretty Ricky's second CD, Late Night Special, also sold more than 500,000 copies for a Gold award.
Also included in the RIAA tally of June certifications are first time Platinum digital single awards for rapper Jim Jones’ “We Fly High” and Rascal Flatts’ “What Hurts the Most." Justin Timberlake received his first triple Platinum Master Ringtone award for the single “Sexy Back,” alongside Beyonce’s double Platinum Master Ringtone for “Irreplaceable” and T-Pain’s Master Ringtone, “Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin’)."
