The First Minister was accused of “government by Google” after backing up his claims on the crunch issue with an email claimed to be from a European Commission official.

Salmond’s spokesman later admitted he did not know who the email had been sent to or what questions it answered.

Last night, Scottish Labour leader Johann Lamont said: “This is an amateurish and shameful attempt by Alex Salmond to mislead the people of Scotland.

“It seems Salmond is basing Scotland’s future on his ability to Google. What other parts of the White Paper rely on random websites?”

The SNP launched their White Paper on independence this week with claims that Scotland would quickly be accepted into the *European Union.

But Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy insisted a go-alone Scotland would start life outside the EU.

That would leave Scotland to renegotiate entry and possibly join the Euro, erect border controls with England and lose out on the EU budget rebate.

At First Minister’s Questions yesterday, Salmond quoted a letter purporting to come from Mario Tenreiro, a head of unit in the EC’s secretariat general.

It stated it would be “legally possible” for Scotland to negotiate its EU membership after a Yes vote while it was still a member as part of the UK.

But one hour later, Salmond’s spokesman admitted it had been found on Newsnet Scotland, a pro-independence website.

Even the controversial letter makes it clear Spain could veto Scotland’s entry of the EU. It says: “The democratic process is a matter for the UK and Scottish Governments and the Scottish people and, as you say, it would of course be legally possible to renegotiate the situation of UK and Scotland within the UK.

“Of course, this would imply a change of the Treaties which could only be done by unanimty of all Member States.”

The Spanish government are worried about Scottish independence because they face similar claims from Catalonia and the Basque country.

Salmond was previously branded a “bare-faced liar” over EU membership after he claimed to have legal advice showing *Scotland would become a member.

It later emerged no such advice existed.

The Scottish Government subsequently sought advice on the matter but have refused to reveal what it says.

Lamont said: “The First Minister just can’t seem to tell the truth when it comes to Scotland and the European Union.

“Did Alex Salmond write to the EU Commission to ask for this opinion? No. Did the Government? No.

“The fact is we do not know who wrote the original letter or what they asked because Alex Salmond pulled the letter off the internet.”

Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson added: “This shows just what a shower of rank amateurs this SNP are when it comes to international *diplomacy.

“Quite simply, Alex Salmond is clueless on Europe.”

Didn't the EU say like a year ago that breaking our Act of Union with England doesn't break our relations with the EU? Scottish citizens have had rights in the EU for 20-odd years and will continue to do so until they decide to leave the EU?

And people seriously can't work out why some people would choose to be ruled by a Government they elected rather than one their opinion is irrelevant in? Wow. Be opposed to it all you want, but if you can't see the logic behind people wanting it then you're really not in a position to comment.

Scotland hasn't voted Tory for 20 years. Our current Government is Tory. The Tories aren't even in the Top 3 Scottish Political parties. That alone should show you that Westminster doesn't represent Scotland.
