Gaga with her image and Beyonce with her sound.
I feel like a lot of time artists (not just and Beyonce) base their image/sound on a trend that was already successful/well received then recycle it to people who haven't heard/seen the trend.
Is it fair to the people who worked hard on that image/sound?
Is it fair to the current artist who do something new/create new trends.
No, none of the pop girls are original. But people don't bother looking into Katy/Rih/Ke$ha etc. because nobody suspected them of being original in the first place.
So really, accusing Gaga and Bey of being "unoriginal" is a compliment
Every artist is influenced by what has been done before their time. If not by direct exposure, the information the artist is exposed to through other people, media, etc. influences them. We are all a product of our times and have the benefit of those who have walked similar paths we are now on. We all borrow because it has all been done before and we are not the originators. To merely copy is to take an existing interpretation and not run away with it. To steal an idea is to take something of value and make it yours. To make an artistic element yours you have to interpret it your way with your own approach.
This cannot be done when you are merely copying the idea. When copying the idea you are just doing everything exactly like it was previously done. When you have done it your way you have used the element and not simply duplicated it.
It is not required that you advance the element. You can go sideways and even backwards with the idea and you can be stealing the element and not copying it. On the contrary, when merely copying the element you have failed if you do not match the original.
But Gaga has been accused of being a copy-cat and unnoriginal since the day she performed @ miss Universo and started her career. We all know EVRY single thing about her is taken from someone else. So, yes she does TOO much, and beyonce does as well.

If that what makes you sleep at night, then continue being delusional hun.
Pop music is by nature, unoriginal. Unless your fave is Beethoven or Bach LoL
Michael Jackson's source of inspiration famously included Elvis Presley. And Madonna has had many run-ins with lawsuits from her long list of "unoriginal" moments.

Aw! You've found a way to cope with the accusations. This is inspiring.
David Bowie isn't that original either he referenced or "copied" many artists before him in his work as well. Bowie and others like Madonna/Elvis were lucky the internet wasn't invented during their prime

Great answer. This could apply to moonwalk by MJ. He was "inspired" by children in the ghetto but he ENHANCED it and did it in his own way. Thats what makes him great.
No, they are inspired by great artists and it translates in their great works. I don't think they BASE their entire image off referencing others, they have their own style.
