They're not really related to most East Asians. The original Central Asians were Turkic-Persian (you'll still find some of them there) and then Genghis Khan invaded Central Asia so the Mongolian settlers mixed with many of the indigenous people. They're of the same origin as the Chinese Muslims (Uyghur/Uighur people) that are in the news all the time for the bigotry they face in China.
