Produced by Will.i.am and co-written by Spears and recent Billboard cover star Sia, "Perfume" allows Spears to momentarily discard the confident exterior of "Work Bitch" and express vulnerability over "paranoid" feelings about her romantic interest. "Have you been thinking 'bout her or about me/And while I wait I put on my perfume, yeah I want it all over you/I gotta mark my territory," Spears admits over waltzing synthesizers and sparkling rhythms.

Brit gets a little angsty, despite the sweet voice, adding, "I hope she smells like perfume." Paranoia and insecurity flood the song's lyrics as she sings about an unsure lover. The production pushes the track ahead at a moderate pace, with even cymbal crashes and the sawing bows of an orchestra.

This is Spears as we haven’t heard her—or at least not for a long while: singing a straight-ahead ballad with no talking and no heavy beat behind her as on past semi-ballads like “Unusual You” or even all the way back to “Sometimes.”
Though still slickly produced, on “Perfume” the focus is on her vocal and the emotional weight of the lyrics as Spears hopes that the next woman to touch her man can smell her perfume on him. She admits she’s insecure and “I want to believe it’s just you and me/sometimes it feels like it’s three in here, baby,” and not in a good way as she extolled in 2009’s “3.” It’s the kind of ballad it’s easy to imagine Gwen Stefani talking on.

Britney’s back, y’all. The hit song the Princess of Pop “spritzed” us with is titled “Perfume” and it doesn’t disappoint.

Apologies to anyone expecting a scratch-and-sniff confection; “Perfume” is an angsty ballad in the vein of Spears’ “Everytime” or “Don’t Let Me Be the Last to Know.

As for the score, 'Work Bitch' seemed like a 9 on a couple of listens but swiftly fell to a still-respectable 7 due mainly to poor structure and pacing, but 'Perfume' feels like an 8 that could end up as a 9, wouldn't you say?

On the synth-pop ballad, Britney lays her heart out bear as she belts, "And while I wait I put on my perfume, yeah I want it all over you / Gotta mark my territory." Spears was quite the balladeer on her first albums "...Baby One More Time" and "Oops!... I Did It Again" and she finds her voice once again on this revealing single, giving her best vocal performance in recent years. Fans wanted a more personal "Britney Jean" and they get the real Britney down to her very essence on the beautifully stunning tune "Perfume."

We gotta say, Britney's vocals sound great on this -- she hasn't released a true ballad since 2004's "Everytime," so it's nice to have them back.

Britney Spears just premiered the official second single, a mid-tempo ballad entitled “Perfume” (following on the heels of “Work Bitch”) off her upcoming eighth studio album, Britney Jean, due out on December 3rd via RCA Records. The song (with surprisingly strong vocals) was co-written with one of the best songwriters around, the lovely Sia and was produced by the legendary William Orbit! This coming Tuesday, November 5th, you’ll be able to purchase “Perfume” and also place your pre-order for Brit’s new album which is rumored to be her most personal album yet. If this song (which is unlike anything else we’ve heard from her in awhile) is any indication of things to come, we’re in for a treat!

'Perfume' is the evidence she can sing and ammunition that’s been so needed for fans for years. It’s an absolutely beautiful song. And while Britney may never release a ballad quite as devastating and raw as In The Zone‘s “Everytime” again (what could match the heartbreak of a lost first love?), this is certainly one of the best, most mature ballads she’s done since.

'Perfume' is a much more delicate release, a hark back to some of her more successful ballads like 'Lucky,' and as the singer herself revealed recently, it is also a much more personal release than her raunchy first single.

'Perfume,' is one bomb ass ballad. Hide your sad lyrics, hide your swelling music, because 'Perfume' is slaying all pop ballads that have come before. Much (or all) credit must go to the writer of the song, the brilliant Sia, but that does not change the fact that Britney sounds better than she has ever sounded before, and we cannot stop singing this tune. Get it gurl!

It's not her best ballad, but it's in her top 3 for me.

No, it's one of her blandest, phoned in ballads. Guy Sigsworth gave her scraps, unlike Everytime and Someday -- which she had a big hand in, and it does not have much emotion. Saying it's better than Everytime is the utmost in blasphemy.

Out From Under was overshadowed by the superior Unusual You.
I also think OFU gets flack because it was already recorded for Bratz, and Britney literally just re-recorded it.

A bona fide brand, Britney Jean Spears has released 13 different fragrances in the last nine years, reportedly raking in $1.5 billion internationally, so an attempt at some cross-promotional synchronicity was, perhaps, inevitable. "Perfume" is the second single from Spears's eighth studio album, Britney Jean, following the disappointing "Work Bitch." Co-written by Spears and the usually reliable Sia and co-produced by will.i.am, the song is a midtempo ballad that likens perfume to urine: "I put on my perfume/Yeah, I want it all over you/I'm gonna mark my territory," Spear sings, her occasionally pitchy vocals veering close to parody. It's a ballsy choice for a single, given that the pop star hasn't scored a hit with a non-dance track since her first fragrance, "Curious," hit the market back in 2004 (and, it should be noted, the success of that song, "Everytime," was largely due to its club mixes), to say nothing of the fact that "Perfume" equates lingering fragrances to territorial pissings and effectively reveals Brit to be a water sports enthusiast.
