You're not supposed to subtract anything, it's called difference of squares because you have to separate it into 2 different brackets, the first one has to have + in it and the second one -. You have to divide both numbers into the brackets in this way:
(sqrt of 1st#+sqrt of 2nd#)(sqrt of 1st#-sqrt of 2nd#). So, if it was 4x9 if would have been: (2+3)(2-3)=36
OP, whoever gave you this, you can't work this out because the square root of the numbers given are not whole numbers...
