Lady Gaga is a commodity. When you relate to her old video ... is clear: she is incredibly talented and is absolutely a marketing and entertainment genius ... but, when you relate to her old video, we see a completely different person. She built this image for us, and she used what we want to hear. It's not like Madonna . Madonna is not always herself. Madonna's genius is in anticipating trends and reinventing herself to fit where she thinks music is headed. Gaga does the same.
All pop stars are commodities and the person who wrote this fails to understand that even Madonna looked for trends as "waves to ride", so to speak, and sold herself to us. That's what pop music is; a singer sells himself or herself to the public. No real "pop stars" are special exceptions to this - however, it's belittling to say that this is all of that to which most artists amount, especially when Gaga in particular puts so much effort into her work.
What really strikes me is that Madonna used to change a lot between eras too.
