I have seen nothing official yet, but these current slower-tempo Modern/Mainstream rock singles from
heavy metal groups will eventually try to cross over to Top 40/CHR territory:
Better Than Me (Hinder)
Everything (Buckcherry)
Forever (Papa Roach)
Zzyzx Rd (Stone Sour)
X-amount Of Words (Blue October)
I assume all will reach the upper 20 of any pop chart. Hinder and Papa Roach could even peak at the top.
Is this the year rock finally supplants Rap and R&B from the CHR playlists? Will pop-tards embrace (or in some cases, welcome back) these heavier influenced singles? How successful do you think these tunes will be?
"Forever" is going to be P Roach's biggest hit. Bigger than "Scars". You watch. And, sadly, new Hinder will, obviously, be a big hit. I'm not too sure about the others and i'm really not sure that "sillyworld" will catch on like "Through Glass" did.
As for the actual topic at hand, pop radio hasn't been embracing heavier music, mainstream rock is becoming increasingly more and more pop. Look at the #1 rock song in the country. "Pain" is, by far, TDG's most mainstream single.
And take it from somebody who listens to metal on a daily basis: None of those bands(I repeat: NONE OF THOSE BANDS) that you mentioned are "heavy metal" in any way, shape or form. The closest band to that distinction is Stone Sour and they are more hard rock than metal.
noone out those artists can be considered heavy metal, or metal at all....metal is really cold now in USA, famous bands that are metal in USA are slayer, pantera, morbid angel, metallica, anthrax... stuff like that
I have always considered "heavy metal" as anything that emerged after the
'70s hard rock bands (Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, etc.) and continued on
with the loud guitars, hearty rhythm, and lyrics about women, drugs, and
partying. Some of the groups you mentioned I would spread into the black,
speed, or death metal categories. I will digress, because we could argue the
semantics of labeling all night and probably have disagreements everywhere.
But I still say all 5 of the bands I listed as heavy metal contenders.
As for Papa Roach, Scars was a medium-crossover hit. I think it scraped top
10 on Billboard's Mainstream Airplay chart. I pretty much remember a peak of
15 or 16 on The Hot 100. The new single will easily pass those figures I
would guess. In fact, the reason I began the discussion was assuming each of
those tracks listed would be the biggest hit of each band's career.
I do not agree that rock is getting more mainstream. I think we are just
getting back into the cycle where rock acts will dominate more radio stations.
R&R has always been played on pop stations. I am guessing it will be more
saturated this year for some reason.
^ok..we´ll skip that discussion, ...just saying that old school metal hardly exists anymore in US, closest is thrash like metallica, slayer etc...
but yeah, obviously rock is getting more and more spins on radio, and the singles do become big hits!....the radiorock (with nickelback and daughtry in the forefront) is almost about to take over, OMG...
I may have had the Stone Sour single wrong. I also read that Zzyzx Road was being sent to top 40 stations. It is a lot more pop friendly than Sillyworld. It reminds me of Beth by KISS.
Zzyzx Rd. would be a MUCH more awesome single than sillyworld, but how reliable is that information?
As for the whole rock argument, okay, you can say that rock is being embraced again by pop radio, but there is no doubt in my mind that rock is more mainstream than it has been in a long time. Look at the songs in the top ten on Alt radio(well, really, the top 12). All but ONE of those songs would do well on pop radio right now. And why is that? Because mainstream rock is much more accessible to the public than it would have been just a year ago. I'm not saying that mainstream rock is pop, because it's STILL rock music, but it has gotten more pop than it was before.
No clue on how official the Stone Sour information is.
I'm not sure how to compare last year's Modern chart to this year except to show them.
Billboard Modern : March 3, 2007
Pain (Three Days Grace)
Starlight (Muse)
Snow (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
From Yesterday (30 Seconds To Mars)
Famous Last Words (My Chemical Romance)
Face Down (The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus)
Dashboard (Modest Mouse)
This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race (Fall Out Boy)
Read My Mind (The Killers)
Survivalism (Nine Inch Nails)
Breath (Breaking Benjamin)
Dig (Incubus)
Billboard Modern : March 4, 2006
Every Day Is Exactly The Same (Nine Inch Nails)
Wasteland (10 Years)
Dance, Dance (Fall Out Boy)
Perfect Situation (Weezer)
Hypnotize (System Of A Down)
Lights And Sounds (Yellowcard)
King Without A Crown (Matisyahu)
Dare (Gorillaz)
Talk (Coldplay)
Bat Country (Avenged Sevenfold)
No Way Back (Foo Fighters)
The Denial Twist (The White Stripes)
For this week, I think only Fall Out Boy, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and Three Days Grace would have any shot at a Top 20 CHR hit. Last year's chart I'm not too sure about. I think Matisyahu, Fall Out Boy, and Gorillaz may have gone Top 20. Either way, rock looks to be swooning this year.
