'Disinterested' Rihanna SLAMMED by Australian Media
Rihanna's Australian leg started off in Perth last night to mixed reviews from critics. This from one of the two major Australian mastheads Fairfax's The Age
Quote:
Rihanna makes a shocking spectacle of her Diamonds World Tour Australian debut
Crotch-grabbing, apparent slurring and disinterest in singing marked the Perth leg of Rihanna's Australian tour.
It's hard not to be cynical about the kind of show that will be put on by a performer who makes more headlines for public spats, tweeting notes on a Thai sex show and posting an illegal snap with a protected animal, than her own gigs.
But she's also released seven albums in seven years, won six Grammy Awards and has a Twitter following of more than 30 million people.
So I wanted to be impressed with the two hour show put on by Rihanna for the Australian premiere of her Diamonds World Tour, but I just wasn't.
Bored and restless fans had waited inside the Perth Arena for her to take the stage, the delay inching ever-closer to the three-hour wait suffered by her Boston fans.
More than 40 minutes late, she appeared on-stage sporting a mullet and within the first minute had begun grabbing and rubbing her crotch - something that continued unabated for most of the show (and for those playing along at home, was accompanied by lyrics like “come and put your name on it” and “boy I wanna f--- you right now”).
The spectacle of the crotch-grabbing might have been lessened had most of the audience been singing and dancing along, but the first 10 songs included just one single - Talk That Talk.
She dedicated the first half of her all-ages show to what she referred to as “this reggae ****” - the nod to her Barbadian roots was jointly appreciated by some fans and a source of boredom for others.
While slurring marked the first half of the show, it was her disinterest in singing along to more than half the words of each song that marked the second half.
Largely carried by her back-up singers and backing tracks, she danced across stage with or without her microphone at her mouth, to much the same effect.
But when she changed gears from the reggae and kicked off a run of singles with Rude Boy, the change was palpable. Hands skyrocketed into the air and seated fans jumped to their feet.
When she followed with What's My Name, her lyrics were echoed back at her by thousands of enthusiastic fans waving their phones in the air and jostling for a better view.
Six costumes included what appeared to be a pair white pants, but were actually crotch-height boots, a red and yellow leather bustier and pants with see-through mesh sides and a silver hologram costume.
Much of the audience - significantly comprised teenage fans - remained standing for Rihanna's Umbrella, All of the Lights, Rockstar, Take A Bow, Hate That I Love You, We Found Love, S&M, Only Girl in the World and Don't Stop The Music and gave mostly positive reviews on Twitter of her performance.
Barely a trickle made their way out before she returned for an encore and finally smashed it out of the park vocally with Stay and Diamonds.
“Thank you guys so much for reminding me of what Australia's all about,” she said at the end of the near-sold out gig. "This was the perfect way to start this tour.
“I'm spoilt; I mean the rest of Australia don't really have to bring it because you guys are top f---ing notch. I can't wait to come back here.”

Sounds like a mess. Should I keep my ticket for Monday night?
EDIT: Yet ANOTHER SCATHING review on Rihanna's Perth concert.
Quote:
How to put fans offside 101: arrive 35 minutes late, don't play a bona fide hit until 11 songs deep and then perform some of your biggest songs as a medley. Oh, and share most of the singing with your backing vocalists.
Despite following these rules to a fault, Barbadian pop babe Robyn Rihanna Fenty still won over most of the 13,000-strong crowd at Perth Arena for the first Australian date of her Diamonds World Tour.
Perhaps the fans were distracted by the busy, booming sound, eye-popping costumes (highlights: hip-high white boots, booty-hugging long red skirt) and almost continuous crotch slapping, twerking and other provocative moves.
To be fair, Ri-Ri's sexually charged performance was never as salacious as Miley Cyrus and there was nothing that Michael Jackson didn't do to his netherland on stage. Speaking of Jacko, the six backing dancers recalled sister Janet's Rhythm Nation era.
And the hits, when they finally came, were mammoth. The 25-year-old's best song, Umbrella, sparked a singalong that nearly opened the arena's roof during the third of four acts, plus an encore of mega-hits Stay and Diamonds, both from latest album Unapologetic.
The final segment featured medleys, including one which melded We Found Love, the dirty S&M, towering Only Girl (In the World) and Don't Stop the Music - four songs that have combined sales of more than one million copies in Australia alone.
That's a luxury that only a pop superstar such as Rihanna can afford. She's been involved in a jaw-dropping 24 hits that have sold platinum or more in this country, a run that started only eight years ago with her debut single Pon de Replay (Bajan Creole for "play it again").
Speaking of Barbados, Rihanna seemed most at ease rolling through the five-song second act of reggae numbers better suited to her patois. This featured the first No. 1 of Tuesday night in the rowdy Rude Boy.
The singer - well, part-time singer - was joined by two backing vocalists and a muscular rock quartet featuring lead guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, formerly of Boston rockers Extreme and ex-husband of Baby Animals singer Suze DeMarchi.
This was the first time Rihanna had kicked off a tour in Perth, previous visits in 2008 (with then boyfriend Chris Brown) and 2011 finished at Burswood Dome.
"This was the perfect way to start the tour," she said during one of the brief audience interactions. "You guys are top f...ing notch."
Wish we could say the same about her. Rihanna isn't the best live singer (that's Beyonce) or best dancer (Beyonce, too), and she doesn't have the best production (Lady Gaga). She's prolific but not as hard working as Kylie, Pink or Dolly.
But Tuesday night was not the worst show Perth has seen, far from it. That honour goes to Britney Spears' disaster at the Dome in 2009. While Rihanna did not shine bright like a diamond, the show was no lump of coal.

Lmao "within her first minute she's begun rubbing her crotch". *sigh* Rih. You know what, this site and the world try to put Rihanna in the pop girl category but she really isn't that. She's a rockstar. You will def enjoy but the show isn't very 5,6,7,8. Its like a rock concert. Plus Rihanna just has this charisma and character you'll just feel so badass. I went to see her at Hackney and I just loved her.

Australians are so bitter. Remember when they walked out of Britney's shows and gave her horrible reviews because she lipsynced?

I still don't see why people act surprised to see Rihanna grab her crotch and sing provocative lyrics. You didn't pay to see ****ing Susan Boyle.
And @ you not bolding the positive parts of the review.

I've seen Rihanna 4 times, twice at Jingle Ball, Last Girl on Earth and Diamonds. I don't go to a Rihanna show with the same expectations as a J.Lo or Britney show. I go for the attitude and energy she gives off.
Rihanna's show make me feel like I'm at a mix between a rock concert and a fetish party. I love her

Its sounds like they're just not here for swagged out Urbanna, they don't understand that aspect of her style. She starts her concerts with the same energy as a rap concert. In America, especially in cities like Detroit, Atlanta, Philly, and Brooklyn the first section of the show was called the best. Birthday Cake, Pour it Up & Talk That Talk were huge urban hits in America. I'm not sure if they were even released in Australia. AUS is clearly more here for Only Girl/ What Now/ California King Bed Rihanna.

They really are.
This reminds me of Britney when she toured there in 2009.

hello?????the first act was urban and everytime Rihanna doesn't sing the whole song cause that's who she is! god its like you wanted to go to another's singer concert!
Rihanna Is The Queen and she is THE ONLY PopStar/RockStar who can take a show so simple as DiamondsWorldTour is and make it shine bright like a diamond!
