I think a lot of the time, very technically impressive singers have little emotion to their voice. It's difficult for me to watch American Idol (or even some Bey performances, sorry babe) because they make it all about oooooOOOOooooo HITTING THOSE IMPRESSIVE NooooOOOooooTEEEeeS! For me, there is something way more impressive about a singer who can subtly emote without having to do vocal olympics on every song.
ex. Gwen isn't the most gifted singer by any means, but she's literally crying while singing this. She sounds so raw and hurt. A moving performance.
I love Leona's voice but sometimes her voice can sound pretty lifeless during performances. Where as when Adele sings, there's a believability to what she's singing.
Both, like Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Jill Scott, etc.
Certain singers are impressive and expressive even though they don't do big notes and vocal runs, like Karen Carpenter. There's simply no excuse for being a bad technical singer.
I always like expressive vocals. I think out of all the singers from singing competition, I can pick Carrie Underwood as one of the most expressive and also has the ability to impress. I just hate it when an artist is disconnected to the emotions of the song just because s/he wants to impress his/her audience.
Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey have all been called soul-less and they just so happen to be the most skilled singers of their generation.
I think it says something about pop/rock music critics/fans. They've gotten so used to bad technical singers covering up their mistakes and acting "emotional" to make up for it, that anything else is soul-less. I guess that makes them "artists" (not really, anyone can be emotional), but it also makes some of them unlistenable IMO.
Opera singers are actually the most skilled and nobody would call Maria Callas or Leontyne Price soul-less. In fact, the opposite is true, we consider them to be the most dramatic and most emotional singers, no? Anyone watching Leontyne Price sing can't possible think she doesn't have depth.
Though I do think Adele is very emotive, so I enjoy her voice even in a live setting. Can't say the same about the other girls though.
