What do you consider ROCK music?
I've been contemplating this for awhile. In the Hot 100 and TRL threads I see "Go FOB, finally a rock single to contend for #01" and "AAR is rock." I really don't consider FOB all that "rocky" and definitely not AAR. Sure they play instruments, but so does Simple Plan and I know a lot of people here and in general consider Simple Plan pop. So, what makes Simple Plan different from AAR and FOB? (and don't just say "'cuz Simple Plan sucks," that has no revelance to the genre of music)
And finally, who WOULD you consider rock in today's music scene. 30 Seconds To Mars? Korn? Please, share your thoughts.

generally people consider bands that play disted guitars rock, or if it has a steady drumbeat.
apparantly rock/punk is more pop nowadays than ever before!
i dunno, í mostly listen to hardcore/metal or grunge/post-hardcore when it comes to rock....panic!, FOB, AAR etc. means nothing to me.
but then again...Nirvana made classic music with heavy punk/pop so....it comes down to the quality of the songs..

They sounds like a diverse modern rock style that evokes everyone from Taking Back Sunday (MakeDamnSure), Jimmy Eat World (The Middle), My Chemical Romance (Helena)to DAshboard Confessional (Vindicated).
I didn't know what to think about their last cd,but for me every song on "Infinity on High" is good, and Patrick's vocals are ****ing phenomenal.

It all depends on how the feel of the song is. If you have drums and guitar you can be considered rock but it depends on your songs. For example, I say that Evanescence is not rock. They're "hard pop". FOB and AAR are both partially rock at least.

Fall Out Boy is rock, even though I'm not a big fan.

Korn, nine inch nails, Deftones, Incubus, 311, AFI, Tool, Stone Sour, Glassjaw, Poison the Well, among others I listen to frequently. Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance are rock too, they just get labeled as pop because of their TRL and Hot 100 presence. Happens to every band.
The All-American Rejects wouldn't be considered rock to me, maybe just partially, and Simple Plan have always been pop.

I'd say anything with guitar and drums is rock, although Keane for example has some rock songs and they don't even have guitars. It's not really a genre that can be defined accurately. But pop rock like FOB, AAR, SP, it's poppy but it's still rock.

Pop and rock are too interchangeable to make concise definitions.
It's all up to your own personal interpretations.
Ex. Muse "Starlight" is a straight up rock song, but one of the reasons it's so incredible is because the songwriting has pop sensibility behind it. Same thing with songs like "Wonderwall" and "Mr. Brightside".

0:27 into Paint, It Black by The Rolling Stones. Listen to Keith Richards' playing the progression Em,D,G,D,Em. Now listen to it again, you should be able to feel it, you probably even got the urge to strum the up beats and downbeats in the air. That right there epitomizes what "rock" is and how "rock" feels. Anything that retains some of that essence is rock.

Like Roger said, it's all up to your personal interpretations. But really why waste time with genres? People should pay attention to the quality of a song, not the genre.

That's why I quoted it, I didn't know something better for it.
I mean like it's pop but a lot more deeper or something like that. I don't see anything rock about them except maybe Bring Me To Life (which sucked anyway).

Panic! and AAR arnt rock, the only thing that makes people think that they're rock is the fact that they are guys, use guitars, and dont nessasarily sing girly love songs.
Red Hot Chili Peppers, My Chemical Romance (pretty commericial rock, but rock nonetheless) Radiohead, Foo Fighters, these guys are rock bands.
Nickelback, they're like the rock version of, i can't believe its not butter.

Well, technically all popular bands are pop, it's the entire meaning of the genre.
But I'd consider Evanescence more rock than FOB, Panic!, AAR, and MCR. They use heavy guitar and have more gothyatmospheres to their songs. I wouldn't consider songs like Haunted or Snow White Queen in any form of the pop genre.
I'd consider Three Days Grace, 30 Seconds To Mars, Evanescence, Disturbed, Within Tempation (give a listen to The Howling), and even Flyleaf to be in the rock genre.
I'd say bands like FOB, AAR, Panic!, AAR, Paramore, and MCR are more in either the pop-rock, pop-punk, or emo-rock categories. It doesn't really affect how much I like them though, I still LOVE FOB, AAR, and Paramore.

When it comes to the MySpace Invasion, I use this threshold:
If I was to use some Clorox Bleach to remove the eyeliner, would I get the Backstreet Boys?
Basically, all the recent "rock" bands in the vein of FOB and Panic fail, since I see them as boybands with a bigger Maybeline account. As for bands like AAR or Taking Back, I consider them rock compared to Fall Out Boy. But not when compared to Evanescence, which is rock. Unless compared to Korn.
Rock is basically stratified based on age and budget for costumes. But we should all agree that regardless, Simple Plan and Nickleback are not rock. They are ***** pop.
