Obviously the bar was lower a decade ago when 100% lip-synced performances were hailed as iconic. I think we've seen everything by now. I don't think there will be any other iconic moment ever again. Our generation is too hard to impress.

The bar isn't too high nor is it too low. The problem right now is people wouldn't care much about the performance anymore, they just wanna see their fave attending at least for the GP or sing for "promotion" at least for ATRL, how the performance did is now just a bonus and it shouldn't be that way imo. Some performers try way too hard to deliver something loud, raunchy and liberating that they forget to bring their morals into the performance. A performance is surely ruined if you have to show everything to everyone.
And fyi, not all lipsynced performances are horrible unless you deliver it. Not all performances should be based on their singing but rather the whole package. This is the problem, we are so in-tuned with singing that we worry too much about the voice and less about the other details that matter.
