News: Bradley Manning sentenced to 35 years in Wikileaks case

Pte Manning will receive a credit against his sentence of about three and a half years, including time he has already served in jail and 112 days in recompense for the harsh conditions of his initial confinement.

He could be eligible for parole in about 11 years.

On Twitter, Wikileaks called the sentence a "significant strategic victory".

I mean, he KNOWINGLY handed over classified information to WikiLeaks. He KNEW he was committing a crime. I'm sure if Casey Anthony and George Zimmerman were tried in a state other than Florida, they would have faced time too, they just lucked out because of where they live. Anyway, he provided over 700K classified files to WikiLeaks. Biggest breach in US history. He's lucky they rejected the treason charge or it could've been worse.

Exactly.

And the United States earned their independence through whistleblowing and breaking many, MANY laws. I don't see how giving this guy 35 years in prison is going to change anything, or deter people from leaking information. 5-10 years would have sufficed.
