I don't think music is really representative to one's overall personality, but I do think music plays a contributive part. The part isn't major in any sense, but it is noticeable among other bigger influential factors. - (Such as family, friends, how the one was raised, the everyday environment, motivations, and other connectable aspects in a life.)
And speaking from experience, I have dated an awesome happy-go-lucky cheerleader who listens to Metallica and Britney Spears. (I have even seen her bounce around to some parts of the
Metallica LP, and have pulled out her St. Anger CD which was located next to a few pop CDs.) I didn't notice any sort of heavy metal-rocker-goth stereotype traits while being around her and she was all about wearing the Yellows and Pinks instead of the black.
