Mel Gibson took another foray into epics in creating his newest movie, Apocalypto. It takes place during the beginning of the end of the Mayan civilization-and since he produced rather authentic movies, be advised it is subtitled.
Without spoiling any of the plot, this is an epid adventure-filled with violence, gore, and at times comedy centering around the primary character-Jaguar Paw. Tragedy quickly overtakes our hero and his whole tribe. From here the movies takes about a 25 minute trip into the horrors of Mayan warfare and can get a little gorey and heartless at time, but nobody dared leave the packed theatre I watched it. We must realized that Mel is chronocilizing a period of history where violence was more accepted so its not just gore for the hell of it-keep that in mind.
As an anthropology student, I can pretty much give him thumbs up with his accuracey, as Ive studied mayan society over a years time in dept. He truly portrays the vanity of Mayan cities-clearly demonstrating more than one idea why their culture fell (besides Spanish arrival).
Overall, I would have liked to see Mel further develop the story, although in retrospect I guess he did finish the plot he started-I guess the anthropologist in me was greedy and wanted more. I would not say that this is better than the Passion, however it is quite entertaining for the entire 2 hour run length.
Full of emotional ups...and tons of downs, I would highly suggest this movie, even to those who dont like violence or gore because..you learned about this stuff in school, if that didnt offend you then this wont, its simply a portrayal of what you know.
