Wii U fails to sell Yakuza 1&2 HD, bombing harder in Japan!
Quote:
Judging by the latest Japanese software sales, "Yakuza 1 & 2 HD" has failed to capture the attention of the Wii U audience.
Nintendo Everything posted the Media Create software sales from August 5th to August 11th, which charts the top 20 titles in Japan. Despite debuting on August 8th, "Yakuza 1 & 2 HD" was nowhere on the list. Dual Shockers predicted the poor performance of "Yakuza 1 & 2 HD" when they looked at the sales chart of Tsutaya, one of Japan's biggest retail stores, and saw the Wii U game was absent. With the official numbers finally in, it's safe to say the high-definition collection of the first and second "Yakuza" games didn't click with Wii U owners.
Toshihiro Nagoshi, Sega’s chief creative officer and "Yakuza" producer, previously mentioned "Yakuza 1 & 2 HD" for Wii U was an "experiment" to see how the Nintendo crowd would react to the series. Here's his exact words via Wii U Daily.
To be honest, we’re not aiming to see if the game will be a smash hit. Our real intention is that we want to see how people respond. The existing [Wii U] users are different [from PlayStation owners], so isn't it hard to say if it makes sense?
While Sega wasn't expecting "Yakuza 1 & 2 HD" to be a "smash hit," the fact that it's the worst selling entry in a series that typically does well in Japan crushes any hopes of the game coming stateside, let alone any more "Yakuza" games on the Wii U.
Nintendo consoles usually aren't the ideal place for M-rated games to profit, with "ZombiU" for Wii U being the latest victim. Back in the Wii days, Sega swore off making any more M-rated games for Nintendo after the financial failure of "MadWorld" and "The Conduit," so they deserve some gratitude for trying again with "Yakuza 1 & 2 HD." However, with the Wii U HD collection failing on Japanese charts, it looks like the "Yakuza" series will be staying with its native PlayStation console.
