Celeb News: "Applause" reviews

Lady Gaga's Twitter account went largely silent from February until the end of last month, when she announced the release date for her new single, "Applause," which has now been dropped a week early due to a "pop music emergency." During her hiatus from public view, Gaga underwent hip surgery, commissioned a 24-karat gold-plated wheelchair, and somehow found the time to finish work on her latest album, ARTPOP. Though critics already have their claws out, expectations are comparatively low this time around, and that's probably by design. The promotion behind the release has been decidedly low-key compared to 2010's Born This Way, which had the unenviable task of living up to hype that rivaled the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic.
Which probably explains why "Applause"—a love letter to Gaga's fans, or rather, a love letter to her fans' love—lacks the bigness of "Born This Way" or even "Bad Romance." It's a surprisingly straightforward dance-pop song, neither forward-thinking nor retro (despite a lyrical reference to nostalgia), existing in a sort of nondescript limbo. Musically, it's a throwback to the simpler productions of 2008's The Fame, while lyrically the song perpetuates Gaga's reputation for self-aggrandizement, complete with an affected British accent. It proves she can still craft a catchy hook, but another track from the album, "Aura" (or "Burqa"), which leaked last week, is everything we've come to expect from Gaga: It's messy, self-absorbed, overly ambitious, and downright weird—while still being undeniably infectious. Hopefully the rest of the album follows suit.

Basically everyones acknowledging that she released a safe lead single to get back into the good books and that they hope the album will be more experimental (which it will be).

Guardian praises Applause, "it's good to have Gaga back."
Having danced her way through the purple patch that came at the end of The Fame campaign (not many pop stars have a run of singles as exquisite as Paprazzi, Bad Romance, Telephone and Alejandro) Lady Gaga came down to earth with a bump with her second album, Born This Way. With the album's woeful artwork and a lead single that aimed to save us all one trite lyric at a time, Gaga's imperious phase ended, and despite a clutch of solid singles it felt like the general public were losing interest at the same time as she and her "little monsters" were becoming more fervent and insular. Needless to say, there's a lot riding on her forthcoming ARTPOP album and its lead single Applause (which has been premiered today a week early following various low quality snippets leaking throughout the day).
Having debuted the single's relatively sombre artwork a few weeks ago, along with a knuckle-bitingly pretentious interview, it's a relief that the song's intro is brilliantly camp – all squelchy synths and juddering beats, Gaga singing in an oddly pitched, almost David Bowie-esque vocal style. From there, it launches into a huge chorus about how much she enjoys hearing people applaud her brilliance ("put your hands up make them touch"), which is the sort of narcissism we should cherish in our megastars. There's also a brilliant bit where she plays on the German word for art (some people think she's a bit of a "kunst" now, apparently), and the whole thing breaks down over some rave-y piano lines before some sampled crowd noise appears and the whole thing takes off again, like a ridiculous glam-rock song given a techno makeover. It's good to have her back.
Applause is out today on iTunes.

GaGa can never win. She's either "too generic" or "too weird & experimental". Even though Applause really isn't that safe of a single if these reviewers looked past the production. That's the greatness of the song: unique subject given in a friendly, pleasurable delivery.

True. Without Stan glasses on, can anyone actually see the GP liking this song (little monsters excluded)? I don't want a repeat of Judas.

I said this would happen. People dislike Gaga in the moment, but love her in the past. If you don't like Applause now, then you'll love it when Gaga releases her next lead.

You clearly see a plan. We shall wait then, Stefani, for the second single, right before the unleashing of ARTPOP the album, World Domination 2.0.
