Samarkand, also known ans Marakand, was already a big city when it was conquered by Alexander the Great. Afterwards, it became the iconic seat of the King Shariar from the 1000 and 1 nights, then it became the legendary capital of the Tartars.

Samarkand is synonimous with grandiosity, exotucusm and mysticism. Is Samarkand iconic? If so, more than any other city in the world? Discuss.

It is a legendary city, but I would argue that Jerusalem, Athens, Rome and Alexandria are more iconic.
