Will Applause Be Corny?
corn·y
/ˈkôrnē/
Adjective
Trite, banal, dated, melodramatic or mawkishly
sentimental; embarrassing; occasionally maudlin
Before the release of the single "Born This Way," these lyrics were posted:
"No matter gay, straight, or bi,
Lesbian, transgendered life,
I'm on the right track baby,
I was born to survive."
Monsters, and non-monsters alike, feared that the new single was going to be over dramatic and corny. Unfortunately, after "Born This Way" was released, those fears were realized, but luckily -- or some would say unluckily -- the corny nature of "Born This Way" was overshadowed by the arguable "reductivness" (so Madonna claims) of the single. Now, with the release of two lyric snippets to Lady Gaga's latest single "Applause," those fears are once again being brought to the forefront:
If only fame had an IV
Baby could I bear
Being away from you
Put it in here
I found the vein
and
i stand here waiting
for you to bang the gong
to crash the critic saying:
is it right or is it wrong?
Lady Gaga has never been the best songwriter, with one critic famously comparing her
songwriting to a "stereotypical overly dramatic high school art class adolescent,"
but after reading the new lyrics to "Applause," I couldn't help but wonder:
Will "Applause" be corny?
