I've just recently started looking for bedding for my dorm room. & I've decided that I'm going to buy all the pieces separately. I already have my 600 thread count sheets, but I've stumbled upon some difficulties trying to find a comforter. Ohkay, so here's my dilemma. One half of me wants to splurge on this very nice Lacoste comforter I found for $150, but the other half just doesn't think that I should spend all that much money on it when I know I can find a decent one for like half the price. I already have the colors matched out perfectly for it though, but I'd still need to get the mattress topper, pillow cases, & extra pillows, and that'll add up$$$. Help gurls.


BUT I want to know what y'all are buying. Any furniture you've found, lighting, etc. What technology are you bringing with you. What all do you still have to buy, what all have you already gotten? Color schemes, checklists. I just want to know. What kind of dorm rooms are y'all staying in?

I'm staying in a two bedroom suite style with no roommate. So I'll have lots of space, and I'm still trying to figure out what all I'm going to do to fill it all out.

A lot of my friends buy bedding and furniture from that site. Only downfall is the shipping can take a month. But it saves you money.

You are going to be too busy working/studying (assuming you intend to graduate) to really worry about such things imo.

When furnishing my dorm room I always just went for functional and cheap.



Anyways, some advice. Wait till after you have slept on the bed before you decide on a mattress topper so you know what you need. Dorm room beds/mattresses vary drastically. The ones at my university are very firm and rigid so I got a nice memory foam mattress topper (40$ at Target) and it made a WORLD of difference.

For comforters. Just get what you like but remember that it NEEDS to be machine washable. Things tend to get dirty in dorm rooms fast.

For lighting I would make sure to get something that you can reach from bed on the chance that you spend time reading there. It is a pain to have to get up to turn off the lights.

Buy VERY distinctive towels. Maybe beach towels? From experience I can tell you that generic stuff tends to get stolen/adopted by others.

I wouldn't worry about a printer. Generally it is much cheaper to print on campus, though it varies.

I assume your apt comes furnished since it is a dorm? I recommend not buying a lot of furniture because it will get VERY crowded VERY quickly.

If your apt doesn't have a refrigerator invest in a small one, even if you have a meal plan. It is sooooo convenient.

Girl I still haven't bought my stuff for move in gfhgdf. When's your move in day? I have until Sept to get my things ready.

Necessities: comforter, alarm clock, laptop, printer is optional but comes in handy if you don't want to go to campus everytime you need to print something, tv, flashlight, cleaning supplies, microwave if not included, decor but keep in mind they don't like for you to put holes in the walls, wall phone...

Everything else are Just luxuries really. The only reason I say decor is because it technically is your home so you're going to want to personalize it to better comfort you, but you do not need some lavish looking dorm. Between work, school, and extracurricular activities I was never in my dorm.

And yes please get a mattress pad of some sort and lysol down all of your **** on move-in day. I'm assuming you have a fridge since youre staying in an apt style dorm.

My move in day is August 16. So two weeks exactly.

Anyway, I got my bedding, now I just have to get the other stuff. I'm going tomorrow hoping that I can knock out a lot y'all, wish me luck!

What stores would be good for me to go to? I tried Bed Bath and Beyond, and they had like nothing.

WHAT ABOUT BACKPACKS GURLS.

I want a smallish North Face with a laptop pocket. I wanted to get the Surge 2 but I can't find it anywhere that'll ship in time for move in.

I got most of the necessities there including the comforter. It's hard finding a cheap but cool comforter so I had to resort to buying one with a plain black and white striped pattern.

As for backpacks, you can find a lot of cute ones on Etsy! I plan on getting this one though:

For the comforter and backpack, I think those are the areas where it makes the most sense to splurge. You're going to want something well constructed. I got a pretty nice one last year (+ an amazing mattress topper ) and I've been very happy with it. I find my dorm washing machines very harsh, so I was happy to see it held up really well. Same thing with the messenger bags I got. You don't want them to rip with your textbooks and laptop inside.

I kind of hated dorm shopping freshman year since it felt like I was really burning through money, but if you buy stuff you really like the first time, you won't have to buy much the next few years!

Also don't fall into that trap of thinking it's not worth buying a nice comforter or whatever for a dorm. You ARE going to be living there 9 months out of the year, it's worth it to make it feel comfortable
