Lana's "So Legit" Explained
Quote:
In recent days, the name of Lana Del Rey has been one of the most talked by Little Monsters. In a song leaked on the internet, called “So Legit", Lana disses Gaga. But what would be the reason for this? Is the "Born to Die" singer really talking about the Mother Monster?
“Lana Del Rey is garbage! She’ll never sell as much as Gaga and never will have a tour of the most profitable in history! She is fake!" These are just some of the many insults thrown at Lana by some “Little Monsters" after the song “So Legit" leaked on the internet. But all of them are rushing to make this kind of judgment without having much knowledge about the song.
Until now, only questions, no concrete statement. And this leads us to wonder: Is there an answer? One explanation for all this? Yes, there is! Lana Del Rey has not criticized Lady Gaga for anything, she had a reason for this at the moment, could make all the difference.
Lady Gaga and Lana Del Rey had similar beginnings in the music world. In 2006/2007, Elizabeth Woolridge Grant and Stefani Germanotta, were presented at clubs and bars in New York promoting their songs and EP’s were released by the same man, Bob Leone.

With Lizzy Grant (Lana Del Rey), Bob released the EP “Kill Kill" in 2007, and Stefani Germanotta (Gaga), the EP “Red and Blue" in 2006.

In 2006, Lana and Gaga were two of eight composers chosen to perform at the “SHOF New Artists Showcase" that took place in June of the same year (and that was they both met). Until now, everything was fine, but things were to heat up later.

Bob always wanted to put one of his findings on the charts, and according to some information obtained by us, he created a little competition between singers Gaga and Lana. “So Legit" then, was about to come to life. In this competition, Stefani had done better than Lizzy and won the Bob priority. It was at this time that Gaga began to grow. Still with Bob as her manager, she began working with Rob Fusari and signed her first record label “Def Jam Records." Meanwhile, Lana was set aside, and though she was with Bob, she hadn't recieved the attention she wanted. Probably at this time, came the song in which she mentions Stefani.
You were the freak king of the piercing shop
All the girls thought they could sing, but they’re really not ****
I don’t get it
You’re looking like a man,you’re talking like a baby
How the **** is your song in a Coke commercial, crazy?
I don’t get it Your taste once exquisite
At the beginning of the song, you can see that Lana is talking about Gaga. By the time the song was done, both worked primarily as songwriters, Lana then asks: "How the **** is your song in a Coke commercial, crazy?" then immediately saying "Your taste once exquisite." Gaga had one of her songs in the commercial for Coke at the time, but this and several other passages are metaphors. Stefani at the time had more attention from Bob, Lizzy used various metaphors to ask why that.
What happened to Brooklyn, what happened to New York?
What happened to my scene, what happened to punk rock, rock?
You called me the queen of the downtown scene, babe
How the **** would you go switch it up and then replace me?
I don’t get it, I’m so legit
Tell me, was it ‘cause I wasn’t platinum in jewels?
That perhaps you thought I was a little bit even uncool
Kid, was that it?
In this excerpt, Lana seems to show outrage at the person who she talks to be in a place that could be it. Bob always admired Lana, always believed in her voice and her talent. So for what reason he would choose another priority? Bob even said (about Lana):
Quote:
I fell in love with her voice. Her songs had tremendous potential, were still undeveloped, but I was mesmerized by their lyrics and unusual melodies.
|
Stefani, you suck, I know you’re selling twenty million
Wish they could have seen you when we booed you off in Williamsburg
You’re hurt, I know my words don’t hurt, yeah
This is the point in the song that confirms its a Gaga diss whens he mentions Stefani. But how could she be talking about Gaga, if at the time the Mother Monster had not sold 20 million?
As we stated at the beginning of this review, the song is full of metaphors and this seems to be just another one of them.

Oh, girl, I see you walking ‘round in your pearls
Thinking that you’re number one
You’re so funny, ‘cause honey, you’re not
What happened to Brooklyn, the last frontier?
They said you could make it anywhere if you can make it here
But where, no magic in the air
What happened to Brooklyn, what happened to our scene, baby?
Have we all gone Gaga crazy?
Remember when the streets used to be dangerous and we were born bad
And we were born bad?
For the remainder of the song, the performer continues to demonstrate her dissatisfaction, saying that Stefani is not the number 1 and is not the best. Near the end, we still have the “Gaga Crazy" that makes us question even more music (Gaga is also often used as slang in the U.S. for “crazy").

Last year (2012), began circulating on the web also a ‘print’ where Lana Del Rey, even as Lizza in 2009, says she hates Lady Gaga through Facebook. See:

For a composer, often writing acts as an outlet for daily stress and whirlwind of feelings experienced by artists. Music is an art form and the song seems to have been bred to be a cultural product (so that it is available, it is only because it was leaked). Often Lady Gaga wrote songs about Luc Carl, about ex-boyfriends that did suffer (like Judas) and was misinterpreted by it. We would not be making the same mistake with Lana Del Rey?

Since blew up with “Born to Die" and gained media attention, Lana never came to public criticize Lady Gaga. Would not have all this supposed “hatred" been in the past? When it comes to Bob (manager), she does not seem holding grievances.

(Lana and Bob this year at the Paradise Tour)
Two years ago, Lana mentioned along Bob and Gaga on MySpace:
Quote:
Love you so much Bob. Isn’t strange to hear Gaga on the radio? You had a monumental impact on many people. And if anyone ever decide to listen to me, I’ll tell you then. We’ll see soon. I want to see Brea too. With love.
|
Bob recently revealed that Lana is very grateful for everything he did for her and will never forget it.
|
It's translated from Spanish so there are a few errors in grammar.
Bolded the important parts. So Stefani and Lizzy knew eachother in 2006??? Crazzzzyyy.

Ugh, Little Monsters are so annoying.
Anyway, crazy that they knew each other in 2006 & both eventually became famous.

I'm immature? I'm not the one that wrote a diss track because my performance lost to a better one. I'm just stating what happened. Bob made the right choice since we know how it turned out.

If they love each other or not, it doesn't matter for me and yes maybe Lana was jealous or disappointed about 2008, probably like most of the artists are at some degree envy at others.
But for me, the more interesting question is, why the critic started in NY when Lana become famous.
Both did at some point overhaul their image to become the stars they are.
But I always wondered why it wasn't a problem in the NY scene for Gaga to become a main star in opposite for Lana (the backlash started long before the SNL fiasco)
I only can explain it to myself that this diss song was well known in the music scene of NY and wasn't much appreciated.

I think there's a little bit of reaching there, but the fact that the knew each other is crazy.

What do you mean before? Every hipster blog was praising her until SNL. I must be missing something.

No No, I heard about her the first time in the mid of 2011 like most of us with VG. There wasn't much
of articles back then and Pitchfork wrote positive about her, but at the same time especially in NY,
blogs dissed her(Hipster Runoff etc.) (Rich father, Trailer, Lips etc.)

The article said he was managing 8 girls. Next year we will hear about another one of thse girls
Anyway I like some of Lana's songs and I like some of her videos so its good she got some recognition. Although she comes across so bitter in these lyrics especially ironic that this song surfaces as she is using some generic dance remix of one of her songs(which was a single a year ago) to get a hit.

And? Was Lord Byron bitter when he dissed Napoleon?

It's just bizarre cause Gaga and Lana aren't even really comparable in any way... Lana is a jazz-inspired indie folk artist and Gaga is an electropop artist. That's why this article is so interesting to me.
