Santoro, Vega & Shakira in Dare to Love Me
Oz-U.S. sales company Arclight Films has picked up international rights to Alfonso Arau's upcoming "Dare to Love Me," a $15 million epic romancer set in 1930s Paris about the life of Argentinean tango legend Carlos Gardel.
Spain's Paz Vega and Jordi Molla join the pan-Latino cast led by Brazil's Rodrigo Santoro and Colombia's Shakira. Santoro plays the crooner while Vega and Shakira will play his love interests in a romantic triangle. Principal photography is slated to begin in Romania in spring.
Cinematographer Vittorio Storaro ("The Last Emperor") and composer Luis Enriquez Bacalov ("Il Postino") are also attached.
Pic is mainly financed by Chelsea Films, a Miami based independent production and financing company. L.A.-based Argentine producers Lucas Jarach and Nicolas Veinberg are producing the picture with Arau.
Laura Esquivel, who was originally attached to pen the Spanish-language screenplay, dropped out when producers opted for an English version penned by Jeremy Leven("The Notebook" and "Don Juan de Marco").
Arclight picked up global rights when a previous deal with Wild Bunch fell through.
Sales are under way at the AFM.
Arclight recently picked up international rights to Spanish helmer Bigas Luna's "Yo soy la Juani." Pics released under the Arclight Films banner include Emilio Estevez's "Bobby" and Douglas McGrath's "Infamous."
