Cory Monteith's Death: What Will It Mean for Glee?
Quote:
As fans around the world continue to cope with the shocking news of Cory Monteith's death, little is known about how Glee will deal with his passing.
"Too soon to tell," a Glee source tells us.
Glee production was scheduled to resume in two weeks, at the end of July, and Monteith's character Finn Hudson was expected to return at the beginning of season five, set to air this fall. Now, given the extremely difficult and complex issues surrounding Monteith's death, it is not known when the writers will have new scripts completed, and perhaps more importantly, when the cast and producers will feel it is appropriate to return to work.
"Everyone is in shock," says another source who works on the show. "To say that Cory was much loved on the Glee set doesn't even begin to do him justice."
Monteith was found in a Vancouver hotel room Saturday after missing his check-out time. There is no indication of foul play and an autopsy will be performed Monday.
It is not yet known how the show's writers will handle Monteith's death in the storyline, but Finn and Rachel (Lea Michele) fans from across the globe have been posting their sorrow over the loss of Monteith and also their favorite TV couple, "Finchel," whom they continued to fight for storyline-wise with a weekly fan campaign on Twitter called "Finchel Friday," tweeting their support for the couple every Friday to the press and Glee producers. Finchel fans have created countless fan videos, galleries and Tumblrs in support of the couple.
The episode "Sweet Dreams" was Monteith's final appearance on the show before he died—he did not appear in the fourth season finale as he was in rehab at the time. And the last song Monteith recorded on the show was "You Gotta Fight for Your Right (To Party)!" with Mark Salling (Puck).
Season four ended with Rachel in New York attending NYU and Finn in Lima, Ohio, attending a community college. Cory Monteith's now final scene with Lea Michele's Rachel was a phone call in which she asks him for help with her Funny Girl audition on Broadway. "You're one of the most unique talents in the world," he tells her. "I know you have it in you."
As what is perhaps now a sad indication of previous promotional plans for the fan-favorite couple, Fox's digital content division, @FoxSpecialOps tweeted yesterday: "OK, that's a wrap for today! #finchel & #klaine fans, we start again first thing in the AM. Tomorrow will be good, promise!" The tweet has since been deleted.
Our hearts go out to Monteith's family, friends and fans everywhere.
The show will keep going, they'll just need to deal with this like every serious theme they've covered on the show thus far, tackle it head on and keep going. It's the only way to move past it. I think the only logical way to write Finn off is to kill him. Any other way would just be either a continuity error or seriously out of character for him, and they really should just stay true to Cory as much as possible. Plus it would make for a nice tribute episode.
I think Lea's gonna be taking a lot of time off the show, at least until the last quarter of the season. But they have to keep going. He'd be more hurt if everything just stopped because of this, the show means everything to all of them and their fans.
The show is going to be a mess this season, I can see it, I used to say Finn was pointlass at this moment, but now that Cory has passed I see that actually he was quite important

It should be pretty straight forward - art will imitate life.
They'll kill off Finn, have an episode paying tribute to him and about grief, meanwhile Rachel has gone somewhere to get away from everything and returns later in the season.
I can see them doing a tribute, a song like"Show Must Go On" and then move on really quickly, as they always do
There will probably be little of Lea the first half of the season. If the production team has a heart, that is.
Am I the only one that sees "killing" Finn as tactless? Who cares that him leaving town will be OOC, it's Glee and it doesn't care for continuity, especially now

I'm sorry this guy died, but it's time that show got cancelled.
It's making profit and it got lots of publicity rn (sad, but true). It'll most likely stay for a season more.

It's not tactless, it's dealing with the issue.
And if they want to pay any kind of good tribute a nice funeral and final goodbyes for his character would be the best. And jabbing a cheap shot with going ooc is the most tactless thing to do and I'll seriously stop watching the show if they pull that ****. Cory deserves better than to have his character just dump everything about who he is and leave. For once, they can have an episode of continuity for someone in their cast and crew family for pete's sake.

One of these should happen. But there's 2 seasons ahead, so mostly the latter.
I think this may be the best season yet of Glee. This tragedy has changed them forever and will inspire some great material. The best thing to do is have his character killed off and have it dealt with throughout the season.
I feel like the only reasonable option is to give his character an "honorable" death. Regardless of what they do, people will slam Fox/Glee for milking in on his death, which I don't think would be the case at all. I honestly don't believe that they would stoop to that level and I don't think the cast would be remotely okay with that.

The cast and crew loved him. Forcing them to relive all of this grief and heartache for the cameras so soon just seems cruel to me, and there's a very thin line between exploiting someone's death and paying tribute to their life. I'm not convinced the writers for Glee have it in them to pull off the latter.
You're right though; his character shouldn't just... disappear. I don't know what will happen and I don't know what I want to have happen. It's still too hard to think about.
I think the best idea is to have Finn die for whatever reason (not drug overdose !) as characters have moved all the time and we still see their story lines and sometimes they come back to Lima, and you need a reason for never seeing him again.
A whole episode needs to be dedicated to his death, where there is a funeral and even flashbacks/montage. It will also help to create more story lines for the characters about how they deal with Finns death. Then again, having the cast go through Corys death/funeral and then Finns death/funeral would be too hard on them.
I actually feel horrible writing this now because we shouldn't be worried about a character on a show when a real person who fans looked up to and was loved by friends and family.
The only reason I think is should be canceled or postponed is for the fact of the actors being exploited for ratings. If the writers do, in fact, write in Cory's death as a Finn death it will feel a bit too manipulative. They're already grieving so for them to relive his death as well as "act" seems like it'll be too much on them...especially Lea.
