Movie: Box office: 'Grown Ups 2' on pace to best 'Pacific Rim'

Those who have seen early ticket sales numbers estimate that "Grown Ups 2" could amass a weekend total of $46 million while "Pacific Rim" is estimated to bring in $37 million

The prospective total marks a vindication of sorts for the Adam Sandler-led comedy, which also features fellow veteran comics David Spade, Kevin James and Chris Rock. Heading into the weekend, "Grown Ups 2" received some of the most negative reviews of the summer with just a 7% score on the aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes. Perhaps significantly, the same website indicated a markedly different reception from the viewer perspective with a 90% audience approval rating from more than 50,000 respondents.

By contrast, "Pacific Rim" opened to mostly positive reviews but stands to come in at third this weekend behind a still-strong "Despicable Me 2," which is on track for an estimated weekend earnings of another $43 million. The total should push the sequel to the 2010 animated film over the $200-million mark in its second week since opening on July 4.

"The Heat" is expected to come in fourth this weekend with an estimated take of $4.2 million on Friday, which pushed the Paul Feig-directed comedy over $100 million. Disney's "The Lone Ranger" continued to underperform and looks poised to round out the top five while taking in an estimated $3.4 million on Friday

Pacific Rim and White House Down being beat by comedies is a huge shocker. Also Pacific Rim had a huge advantage because it is being sold for IMAX which is a lot pricer adding to the box office totals.

... and given the really bad drop I don't think Man of Steel will pass 300 million. UGH.

Despite starting at #2, Pacific Rim won't underperform like White House Down. It may even wind up over $150 million by the end of its run, while the other movie won't do over $90 million.

I am not so excited about watching Growns Up 2, Adam Sandler became some kind of racist comedian.

Grown Ups (the first one) is one of the most God-awful things I've ever seen. Literally, just some actors with no script on vacation making awful and cheap jokes that are not funny (unless you're about 7 years old). I have no idea what on earth could make a sequel any better.

I still don't see how the first movie did so well, I literally couldn't get through it. It was just horrible...so, so horrible.

That is what I am talking about. Adam Sandler makes fun of everyone who isn't on his circle. And he always brings actors and put them some physical defect so he could be the perfect one, with the perfect family and millions. I stopped watching his movies the moment he released Growns Up. I watched Just Go With It 'cause of Jennifer and Nicole, but Sandler sucked on that movie a lot.

Word of mouth is quite strong for Pacific Rim. In fact the two or three people that have watched it from my group of friends are even spreading the word, we probably will watch it next week.

Watch the word of mouth be very strong.

Pacific Rim actually shows good holding power over the weekend as the new estimation for the film goes up (GU2 goes down on the contrary):

Looks like Pacific Rim will hold quite well over the next weekend and overseas box-office also bodes quite well for the film

Ps. The $39 million opening actually surpasses the abysmal $27 million projection some analysts are saying, and also surpasses Warner Bros' $30 million prediction.

That's what I think. Even if Grown Up debut better this weekend, that ****** movie does not have a strong word of mouth.
