What are or are there any exceptions when you fast?

Are you still able to drink certain fluids such as water? Tea? Coffee?
Are you allowed to chew some gum? (Since most/some people don't swallow or eat their gum, but rather spit it back out.)
What about taking any sort of medication/vitamens/supplements?
