Image which likened the Chinese president to Pooh went viral
Children’s favourite yellow anthropomorphic teddy bear has become a target for China’s Internet censors.
A recent photo of United States President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping strolling at a summit in California was reposted by a Chinese blogger, Nicaragua Rabbit, on Weibo alongside a cartoon of Winnie the Pooh and his pal Tigger, which bore an uncanny resemblance to the two leaders.
These images went viral and it was not long before China went on another media control overdrive, censoring the bear and his friend from all online searches.
Comments that were posted were deleted and the images were removed from Weibo, a Twitter-like platform used by the Chinese.
Nicaragua Rabbit received the censor’s message response saying: “The post is inappropriate to be published.”
Critics said that over-zealous sensors to control online dissidents have misread the trivial comparison involving Hundred Acre Wood’s honey-loving bear.
