Having worked in fast food and retail (thankfully I'm out now), I've found that a lot of people like to vent their anger at fast food or other low-level workers.
When you're working minimum-wage customer service, you are basic on the lowest level of the social totem pole. You have no power, you make practically nothing, and you basically have to take whatever **** is thrown at you as long as it's from a customer. A lot of people who are frustrated with the lack of power in their own lives like to start **** with these workers to try and demonstrate their dominance over SOMETHING. It's nature really. How do you assert power? You dominate those weaker than you.
I just feel so sorry for the workers. I remember when I was first starting out and people would yell at me, I would just totally shut down, get an anxiety attack and start tearing up. It especially sucks when you're taking **** for something totally out of your control. One time I was working at a restaurant and a customer had gotten drunk and upset with something and wanted to leave. He demanded that I give him a to-go cup for his beer and I had to refuse because it's against the law for restaurants to do that. Needless to say, I had to stand and grit my teeth as he chewed me out for a good five minutes.
