She wanted the cake to have a picture of her daughter's face on it, as well as a scroll and the school's colours. She also asked if the baker could add a graduation cap on top of the head.
However, it appears that her instructions were misheard, as the cake arrived with a cat drawn on Laura's head.
Laura posted a image of the cake on Reddit, where the post is proving popular.
Good Morning America quotes her as saying: "My mum thought it would be funny to get a face cake. She got it and she asked them to draw a little cap on.
"But when she went to pick it up later, she saw that there was a cat on it and started laughing hysterically and said, 'No, that's not what I meant at all'."
Carol added: "When I went to pick it up at the store, I could not stop laughing.
"I told them not to scrape it off... We were all just cracking up."
