But you have to consider that today many people watch movies illegally on the Internet, something that wasn't that common when Shrek 2 was released. So even with adjusted inflation it's still impressive that an animated movie "for kids" grossed that much.
The fact that Toy Story was the first CGI-film ever alone makes it more iconic than 90% of movies from the last 50 years.
