Half social allegory, half home-invasion thriller, The Purge attempts to use thriller formula to make an intelligent point -- but ultimately only ends up sinking in numbing violence and tired clichés.
Everyone was saying it was good.. I thought everyone loved it?
I mean critics generally pan horror flicks regardless so this was kind of expected. Still watching it though, definitely the most entertaining movie choice this weekend.
Seeing this on Tuesday (cheap cinema tickets ). I can't at people still giving a **** about critics and their opinions.
Unrelated but I noticed people are like this with Pitchfork reviews too. I'm an avid pitchfork reader but just cause they give an album a bad review, I'm not going to be put off listening or buying.
Looked like it would be just another movie that couldn't live up to its interesting concept. They tried too hard to appeal to a wider demographic with the masked killers and jump scares when idea itself probably would have drawn enough people in.
I'm still seeing it to see if my theory holds true, though.
It was really good. I'm tired of reading the critic's reviews because they (nearly) all have sticks up their behinds. Get out and make up your own mind. I loved it and will be buying it once it comes out.

I know, right??? Do people not realize who these critics work for? And all media outlets in the US are owned by the same few companies... so if a film isn't distributed by the company under the same umbrella as yours... you better review it poorly and try to influence those sales...
Good thing the studio did a great job with their marketing.
