Paris Jackson's hospitalization Wednesday for a suicide attempt came after a lengthy depression, a source close to the Jackson family tells PEOPLE exclusively.

"Paris Jackson, the only daughter of late pop legend,has been very, very depressed for a while. She's been throwing fits and tantrums, kicking and screaming and cutting herself," says the source.

Being also a popular target for the paparazzi & tabloids at age 15, doesn't help.

Katherine Jackson's attorney Sandra Ribera, who confirms that Paris is now "physically fine" and getting medical attention, adds, "Being a sensitive 15-year-old is difficult no matter who you are. It is especially difficult when you lose the person closest to you."

Meanwhile, Paris' friend tells E! that the teen "seemed totally fine" that last time they spoke.

"I am in total shock," the insider says. "She was her normal opinionated self. She's 15 going on 30, she has a lot of energy and so I am very sad. I didn't see this coming."

"My own personal opinion," Paris' pal continues, "is that Paris has still not gotten over her father's death. She never really had time to mourn because there was so much change that came with his death, and that's something we are all very sad about."

"The recent trial has not helped," the source added. "It's been a big stress on her."

Paris, who's recently been connecting with her mother, Debbie Rowe, may initially have appeared to be acting out – the tipping point, says the family source, may have been when Paris wasn't allowed to go to a Marilyn Manson concert (he's performing in her area Thursday).



"Some of this is normal teenager things, hormonal changes. But now it's serious," says the source. "Paris has said that there is something missing in her life. This is a cry for help."
