The show, once a ratings juggernaut for MTV, pulled in an average of just 5.77 million total viewers over its three hour telecast starting at 8 p.m., down 28% from the 8 million viewers it averaged last year, according to preliminary data from Nielsen Media Research. Just two years ago, the show brought in nearly double last night's audience-10.3 million viewers.

You said it. What was once MTV's plateau, an outstanding event for anything standing, a mere six million, not even, will not cut it. This is musical television, not people claiming they've brought Sexy Back, including Al Gore (lol) Maybe people didn't watch because last year was a dissapointment?

Well, I mean the biggest show on American TV only gets like 28 million viewers or something like that. The Superbowl gets 50 million I think, so comparing it to a population never looks good.


But yea either way, horrible ratings.....the Teen choice awards may have done better.

The VMA isn't taken as a serious award anyway. The Emmy Awards was even worse in my opinion but it still managed to get higher ratings because they don't make up stupid categories like "Best Kiss" and "Best Ringtone"

Well, this is off topic but I think from now on we should stop comparing everything with the past years . Everything is changing. I mean I missed the VMAs on T.V so I watched it on Overdrive. I used to buy albums like crazy after i hear the first single ,and then I get disappointed with many of them. Now I download them and buy like 1% of these albums I download, Same with DVDs & Movies.

I used to watch Music channels waiting for my favorite music video to show up. Now I barely watch T.V and I prefer logging into YouTube watching whatever "I" wanna see.

Life is getting easier ,Maybe we're taking more advantage than these artists who work hard for this. But you should blame the technology .I think we really have to get new standards for Artists/Movies/Shows' success.

True. It's not hard to find downloads of the performances. There's no reason to watch it all.

Yeah, VMA has stupid awards and isn't taken as serious awards mainly because of that.
Anywayz, sorry folks, but I gotta say this: they SO need Britney back. Hope she will tell then next year she's performing only if they sign a contract saying she will get a buch of moonmen as soon as she releases a video.
