Yes. More so when stans praise someone who wrote an album full of mediocre songs
Again, quality>quantity

It's not overrated, some artists take time to work hard on their album and have involvement, but that's rare today...

Songwriting isn't overrated.
Writing lyrics is overrated though, and people on atrl seem to think songwriting = writing lyrics only, because they only judge someone's songwriting ability based on lyrics. Writing melodies and composing the song, that's impressive and far more important than lyrics.

The reason why I love Taylor is because of her song writing. So no, it's not overrated.

No, song writing/lyrics is one of the most important things about music for me.

Writing your own songs adds a whole other level of authenticity to the music.
That's part of the reason why, for the most part, the only songs it seems like Britney has an emotional connection to are the ones that she wrote... Everytime, Someday, My Baby, etc. The rest of them are simply put in front of her when she rolls up the studio with a Starbucks frap and she reads the lyrics somewhat to the tune playing in her ear.

Nope. It's the best talent to have! Lyrics, especially.

She co-wrote I've Just Begun, And then We Kiss, Anticipating, Touch of My Hand, Mmm Papi Lonely, Scary, Dear Diary, Freakshow, Everybody, Rock Me In, Mona Lisa, 85% of In the Zone and the flawless
That's Where You Take Me
Britney wrote a bunch of songs. I don't know why she's being bashed as not writing her songs when she has writing credits on all her albums except her debut. Not to mention she wrote tons of unreleased songs. They are not Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga number of writing credits but it's not like she just wrote 1 or 2 songs in her career.

I don't think it's overrated, though that's mostly why I love Taylor as much as I do. I can connect with her lyrics and melodies better than anybody else's today. I feel more connected to her that way.

It's not overrated, simply because people outside of the stan world don't care. Most of the GP aren't buying albums because it was written almost or completely by the artist.
It is a great and respected skill though and artists should receive more recognition for it, I think.

I'd consider a singer who writes his/her own songs vastly more talented than someone who doesn't. But while songwriting is important, I don't think it's important whether the singer wrote the song or not, especially in pop music, as long as the song is good.

I never said Britney never doesn't write songs. I said the songs that she did write come across as much more authentic vs. the ones that she phoned in.
