Discussion: "The Catcher in the Rye" should be a movie.

"The Great Gatsby", an American literary classic, is getting its own star-studded feature film. The hands-down best piece of 20th century American literature deserves one as well.

It's such a brilliant novel with its exuberant yet subtle symbolism and strikingly accurate portrayal of teen depression. If a teen actor were selected to play Holden and he slayed, it would like MAKE his career.

It should REALLY be a movie. Actor/actress suggestions? Comments?

J.D.Salinger hates Hollywood and he WOULD NEVER bite onto it. Its hinted in the book.

Yeah I believe that it was like, practically in his will that the rights to the book not be sold for film adaptations.

I know he didn't want a movie, but too damn bad. He left the film rights to his family if they decide to go forward with them

Yup, like said above J.D. did not want a movie, and I very much agree with him. I never liked film adaptations.

On another note, I never liked the novel, and especially hated Holden as I found him very annoying.

I LOVED Holden.

I can really relate to him.

I see why it shouldn't be a movie. Holden hated phonies. Hollywood is the epitome of phoniness. The film would be the antithesis of the novel. But god damn it, I WANT it.

There might be a play of the novel. I don't know, I found him far too pessimistic and needy, and people like that bother me. The book is one of those that you either love or hate no in between.

The book will be a film, but not in our lifetime. Since copyright says something will lose its rights 50 years after the author dies and then some more years.

It was a great novel along with To Kill a Mocking Bird. I'm extremely grateful to my teacher for introducing these books to me.

There is no one capable of writing, directing, or acting in a film adaption of Catcher in the Rye. And Salinger's estate would never sell the rights in the first place. End of discussion.

This is what I was gonna say. Too bad, I think the movie would be great.

JD stated multiple times he never wants this to be made into a movie, and his family that owns the rights to it have also stated they never wanted a film for it either.

Besides, the book is something you can't really watch to understand it, there's too much in between the lines to grasp that just can't been taken onto the big screen.

Its not like Gatsby that's more cinematic and dramatic that it will translate into a good film.
