In 1972 a fetus was taken from it's mother in Leiden, The Netherlands. Today, 41 years later, this fetus is still used to cultivate cells all over the world.

At the time, the mother did know the fetus was being removed and she gave permission to use it for research, but she doesn't know her fetus is still being used. In addition, the researchers don't know who the mother of the fetus is. Right now cells of the fetus are used in labs all over the world.

It has also been revealed that tissue or body samples from 14m out of 16.5m Dutch citizens has been stored without them knowing.

what are they using it for?

to cultivate cells.... I figure that means they might use those cells to make tissue etc that they transplant to people, like skin/long tissue/etc

But stem cells can live indefinitely -lots of years- if they are well-cultivated. Not to mention if they're cryogenized, in which case they survive even more.

I'm pretty clueless in this stuff, but I would assume it does not happen often that a fetus will be taken away from it's mother. The article also mentions that tissue of 14m citizens comes from blood or urine monsters, so I'm not really surprised about that, only that they still save that stuff.
