Utada Hikaru: The Receipts

宇多田 ヒカル
Truly deserving of the title of Queen of J-pop, Utada is one of Japan's most successful and widely known singers. In overall record sales she breaks the top five Japanese artists in history, and is perhaps best known for having the best selling Japanese-language album in music history as well as the biggest Japanese-language hit single of the digital age. Among her many other accomplishments, she released the fastest-selling album in the history of the world and has tied Ayumi Hamasaki for the most million-selling Japanese-language singles. Her work is praised by critics and has become a staple of the J-pop world despite her current hiatus.
Sales in this thread will include global figures when available, such as for First Love.

My queen
What angers me most about her receipts is that her best song, and second best song of all time, Passion, broke her streak of #1 singles.

I know, it's so frustrating. It really deserved #1. It even underperformed digitally; as you can probably tell, Utada has taken advantage of the digital market in a way that few singers have been able to do in Japan, but "Passion" didn't really seem to catch on despite it's quality.

Yeah, there was an article from a reputable source that showed it sold 8 million downloads there. On top of that, it's sold about 651,000 in physical copies.
The digital market in Japan used to be massive before it was basically snuffed out by greedy label tactics.

Queen of J-Pop
Beautiful World should be her best selling single, as it is her best.
Never realized First Love sold that much
