Gaga is, according to people that live there, the most popular artist at the moment, she generates huge buzz, the BTW era was hugely successful there in addition to TF/M era, her touring force there is insane and she gets mobbed everywhere she goes. So, why exactly is she the biggest star out of everyone there?

Her philanthropy for the Tohoku earthquake really scored big points with her. I used to work in LA's Little Tokyo (I'm bilingual in English/Japanese) and so many of my coworkers from Japan told me how everyone in Japan from little kids to elderly ladies know and love Gaga. She's often called "Gaga-Sama", which is kind of like 'san' except 'sama' is generally reserved for Gods

I was watching a newscast one time from when she was over there. The reporters literally spent probably 20 minutes talking about her, from showing baby pictures to going over everything she did while she was in Japan and then cutting to a live news feed of her plane sitting on the runway preparing to leave.

I always heard a rumor that Bloody Mary went #1 in Taiwan too, but I never could find the receipts.

Because her label promote her very hard in Asia. Lady Gaga wasn't making profit for her record label from the rest of the world, so the label had to promote her in Asia to make money.

People like Katy Perry don't need to be successful in Asia. Katy makes her label millions from the US alone.
