Gaga's manager on CDs and the ARTPOP app
Quote:
At AllThingsD's Dive Into Mobile conference today, Troy Carter, head of entertainment management company Atom Factory and Lady Gaga's manager, noted that "CDs are still a huge business" that drive some 70 percent of an album's revenue compared to 30 percent digital — iTunes, Google Play, and so on.
"The physical CD is still the driver right now. Not just from the industry perspective, but from the fan perspective. Walmart has a pretty big CD business," he said, adding that Target had been responsible for moving over 300,000 copies of Justin Timberlake's latest album in the early days of its release.
The continued importance of physical media might come as a surprise to many: Samsung's Experience Shops are in the process of displacing CD and DVD racks in many Best Buys, and hundreds of millions of smart devices globally are capable of downloading tracks directly. That's not to say that Carter is betting on the long-term viability of media that many have long since written off — he predicts that music consumption could go completely mobile over the course of the next three to five years.
Indeed, Carter is working with Lady Gaga on releasing an app as part of her next album, noting that it could help restore the lost experience of a vinyl release's liner notes and album art that he enjoyed as a kid.Of course, this isn't the first time the music industry has collaborated with tech luminaries to try to bring that experience back into the fold — iTunes Extras, for instance, which was met with limited success. Cost could be part of the problem. "These applications are going to cost more than the actual album to do... it'll take a while to get there."
Carter is hopeful that Lady Gaga's app — specifically, the infrastructure behind it — will help pave the way for smaller musicians to augment their albums. In the meantime, though, the Walmart shelf remains as important as ever.

Interesting, I didn't know that such a big part of album sales was still physical. Also, it seems like she's working on an infrastructure much like Backplane and LittleMonsters.com that other artists can buy and use to fit their album release. Get money b!tch

I think ARTPOP's definitely going to be big, not just as an album or era but at how it impacts social techonology. I'm so excited for it to drop!

I hope so, but I fear it won't... Being realistic I don't think many people will buy the app as it will be more expensive than the album (at least that's what I got from this article). Also, I don't see how it could be very revolutionary. I'm actually expecting quite a basic app with the lyrics, a photoshoot and maybe a game or something.
If she includes the videos, unreleased songs, interviews, magazine articles and that kinda stuff it might be a great addition though

I'm pretty sure that what he's saying is it costs more money to make and develop the app than one album, but I don't understand how that makes sense. We'll need to wait to see.

After reading it again, I think you're right. The article actually has me belief she will use the same strategy for future albums as well, so including an app. The infrastructure for the app would already be done, making it a lot cheaper and easier to make. Can't wait what they come up with for ARTPOP

I'M SO PUMPED!!! Also, I totally didn't think physical albums still did so well! I'm glad they do, though, because I almost ALWAYS have to have the physical copy if it's an artist whom I truly love. I hope they NEVER have to stop making them. That'd suck, to be honest.

If the music is comercial enough to be huge, the application can cause impact in technology.

I think he means it'll take a while for the idea to catch on and for more artists to start using the same idea.

Well, I imagine Gaga's albums aren't that expensive for a pop girl. Using big writers/producers is the pricey bit.
Beyond that though, the cost for the app will be high for the time spent developing it, hiring folk at the top of the game to create/program it (probably not agencies/companies because of potential leaks) and perhaps even buying rights for previously established technology. The more complex and more innovative it is, the more money.
I think Troy is pointing out that developing an app like this is beyond reach for any artist without major label funding, so he's hoping once the technology is out there...it'll be cheaper and available for more acts to take advantage of it.

That is a good point. Once it's made, it's made. Just a case of including the latest albums elements.

So instead of utilizing the means to make the app and solely using it for herself, Gaga is helping to pave the way for artists to make apps by having the infrastructure already made and easily accesible.
She is a ****ing saint...
But I guess we aren't seeing ARTPOP for another long while
